32: The Day After...

No, I didn't spot him either the last couple of days, no worries!
But a great way to loose some of that extra calories we all -without a doubt- gained past 2 days, is to grab the next 10 songs and start to dance till you're silly :-)
(but seriously, keep the 'message' from
my previous post in mind, though)
Just another week and it's 2008, I hope to see you all again soon,
for now I'm gonna relax a little bit (doctor's advice :-) and put in mind that E-mile Says Songs Do The Matter never really sleeps and will return to you with a load of goodies...
Cheers!

30: I proudly introduce THE BONE !!!

For my 30th post I'd like to introduce to you a great little band from Italy.
They're called The Bone and they make some incredible music!

Being a big Morphine fan myself (rest in peace Mark Sandman)
I followed the musical remains through the years, The Orchestra Morphine, Twinemen and Bourbon Princess...

And a little while back I was very pleasantly surprised by this band The Bone!
They have that BIG Morphine sound (baritone sax, bass & drums) and they rock like...
hell, just listen for yourselves!
You can find more info on these guys here and visit their website here.
You can listen to their full-lenght CD HERE on E-mile says songs do the matter!

I've been in contact with them and they would be honoured to come to Holland and do a few shows, so if there's anybody out there with ideas, the right connections or otherwise, we love to hear about it!
I sincerely hope that we all can welcome them real soon!
Here's the tracklisting from the Zoo CD:

1. The Bone - Zoo Babylon (3:40)

29: Mark Lanegan

I'm not gonna waste much words on the guy,
if you've never heard of him:GOOGLE the man :-)

I just think he has a GREAT voice, I first "met him" on the

It has become a decent collection,
though I have not all the albums he performs on. (duh...)

27: Reggae, Roots & Rastafari

Two names here that wouldn't directly come to mind, in a 10 song selection of reggae music: Ben Harper and Sinead O'Connor...
Ben Harper's music (my girlfriend is a HUGE fan) is strongly rooted in blues, gospel, soul, jazz and, as this song clearly proves, in the spirit of Jah. Sinead made a few years back a fantastic album with the collaboration of Sly & Robbie, and if you can, buy the limited edition 2CD which has alll the dubversions on the second CD.
The Congos made in 1977 that famous album ofcourse, but this song is from one of their latest. Still sounds great!
Dub Syndicate made some pretty classic stuff on On-U-Sound records, shame that these days most of their albums are out of stock or very hard to get.
I dedicate this one to Robert, by the way.

1. Ben Harper - Jah Work (4:55)
2. Congos - Gods Kingdom (3:58)
3. Donovan Carlos - Be Thankful (3:03)
4. Dub Syndicate - Mafia (7:05)
5. Ijahman - Jah is No Secret (11:26)

9. Wailing Souls - Fire House Rock (4:13)
10. Watty Burnett - Rainy Night in Portland (7:12)

26: Talking All That Jazz!

For today I've gathered some BIG jazz sounds,
some quiet jazz sounds,
some old and some new,
it's all here, within these 10 songs.

don't hesitate, it's a KILLER album!
(for those who are not that fortunate, -it's since long OOP-
I upped my CD to RS, no artwork, just the music, link is in comment)
On the T. Hayes song the great Roland Kirk (an all-time favourite of mine)
can be heard on various instruments (as usual :-)
Although it's all jazz here ofcourse,
maybe the theme for today is "soulful" ?
enjoy!

25: Wah Wah

Ah, wah wah...
You can hear a lot of it in Jimi's music, Johnny Guitar Watson was known to use it sometimes and generally speaking, music history would have sounded a whole lot different, if the thing was never invented. I gathered 10 tracks here that all (in some manner) have more or less wah in them.

I MUST thank Fufu Stew here, cause I nicked a few of his personal goodies :-)
Visit him, he has cooked up a funkalicious souladystic holiday diner!

24: More Covers.....Again!

Yeah, 10 new covers (again)!
Guess they keep me intrigued and awake (alert?)
They're just like coffee, get a few of them and all's fine, but when you've had a couple too much, you could end up having trouble getting to sleep...
The one here I was really amazed by,
was the one that combined U2 and Black Sabbath.
Rather funny, where and how "opposites" can meet!

I think I'm not gonna bother you 'bout more covers for a while,
but they WILL BE HERE again some other day :-)

Lot is said & written 'bout Lee 'Scratch' Perry.
Most of it is true, I guess...
One thing, above all, and that part is very true, is that the man is a musical genius. Like no other.
His Black Ark output/period is without a doubt the most inventive ever. Classic albums came out of there.

The Eighteenth Ten Commandments

Aaah, yes, the people who are darker than blue...
As I already figured, it was indeed a hell of a job to select only 10 songs. I did not want to include the well known hits Superfly or Move on up, but even so, I couldn't possibly reduce this post to a round of only 10 songs. So for (only?) this time I'm gonna present you a double ten (yes, a 20 song) selection I chose from my pile of Curtis CD's.
I included no songs from the live album, that one you
have got to hear from the beginning to the end!
To make up for that, I bring you a one-time-only collaboration with Fishbone in the 'mix'.
Let "Curtom-Curtis" do the talking now..
Respect!

1. Curtis Mayfield - Ain't Got Time (5:07)
2. Curtis Mayfield - Back Against The Wall (6:37)
3. Curtis Mayfield - Billy Jack (6:07)
4. Curtis Mayfield - Blue Monday People (4:48)
5. Curtis Mayfield - Can't Say Nothing (5:15)
6. Curtis Mayfield - Do Do Wap Is Strong In Here (5:32)
7. Curtis Mayfield - Fishbone - He's A Fly Guy (5:09)

The Seventeenth Ten Commandments

For the people who a darker than blue.
(OK, OK, next post is gonna be 'bout HIM -
only 10 songs??? -that's gonna be a hell of a job)
Andy Bey did 1 great album, back in 1970. Rest of his solo stuff is
-to me!!!- rather 'dull' vocal orientated jazz...sorry :-)
But with his sisters he made some nice music.
Nevertheless this one album is a true gem.
I started collecting all the Little Axe albums after hearing the Slow Fuse 2CD album and had the good fortune to see them live!
Great, great band with an unique sound!
Visit their website, see their shows and BUY their albums!
The Stereotype-song is the long version, the way it came out on LP.
A blast! (with hilarious lyrics!)
The Rick James b-side I found somewhere on the web, it's nice to hear that song in a somewhat other way than we all know it.
Enjoy!
1. Alice Smith - Fake is the New Real (3:17)
2. Andy Bey - Tune Up (4:08)
3. Boogaloo Joe Jones - Right On (5:39)
4. Candido - Candido -Hallelujah! I'm Comin' Home (5:57)
5. Donald Byrd - Christo Redentor (5:43)
6. King Sunny Ade & His Africa - Ase (9:17)
7. Levy O'Donel - Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky (3:23)
8. Little Axe - Ride On (5:24)
9. Rick James - Super-Freak (Part 2) (3:30)
10. Specials - Stereotypes Part 1&2 (7:24)
I'm also looking out for some more versions from 'C(h)risto Redentor'.
Magnus used a sample (the choir), Duke Pearson wrote it.
Anyone?

The Sixteenth Ten Commandments

Yes, swampfunksoul!
The great Tony Joe White, famous for the song
Pork Salad Annie of course.
In the early seventies he made a couple of GREAT records,
with an unique feel to them.
Southern, swampy, laid back but most of all: superfunky!
I gathered 10 song from these albums, go sit on your front porch,
have a listen and judge for yourself...

1. Tony Joe White - A Night In The Life Of A Swamp Fox (4:39)
2. Tony Joe White - Backwoods Preacher Man (2:44)
3. Tony Joe White - Even Trolls Love Rock and Roll (4:55)

8. Tony Joe White - They Caught The Devil And Put Him In Jail (3:50)
9. Tony Joe White - Voodoo Village (3:06)
10. Tony Joe White - Willie And Laura Mae Jones (4:57)

enjoy, and keep the E-mile up!

The Fifteenth Ten Commandments

Duets & more this time.
Some are a bit strange (I don't think Dean Martin sat actually IN the studio with Shelby Lynne & Big Bad Voodoo Daddy for instance).
But most of them are quite wonderful.
No musical theme here, just 10 duets.
Enjoy.

The Fourteenth Ten Commandments

I included one song here that's not "black", simply because I promised it last time.
The original Fancy from Bobbie Gentry. "Just plain white trash"...
Here's a (playbacked) performance of the song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4ZCrMESar8
Her life story is a bit of a mystery,
but she made some "darn" good music!
Think I'm gonna post some more of her great songs in the future.
For the other 9 songs, what can I say? I had a "black" feeling today,
full of soul, blues, funk and all that jazz.
Enjoy:
1. Allen Toussaint - From A Whisper To A Scream (3:32)
2. Andre Williams - Only Black Man In South Dakota (3:28)
3. Bobbie Gentry - Fancy (4:15)
4. Carlos Garnett - Taurus Woman (12:14)

10. Terry Callier - You Goin' Miss Your Candyman (7:16)

The Thirteenth Ten Commandments

Aah. Number 13.
The lucky number!
To be on the safe side, on the good foot
and with enough sugar in my coffee,
I dedicate this one to the ladies.
The 'funky diva's' and the others who just know how to rock your boat.
No Aretha here, though she should be of course,
but everybody already knows HER...
(I presume!)
Limited as I am here (only 10 songs)
I chose a few funky female singers you've probably never heard of,
(except Betty Lavette, I'm sure)
but which are all worthy your undivided and totally devoted attention.
I'll give you the original Bobbie Gentry
version of the song Fancy in my next post.
enjoy:
1. Betty Barney - Momma Momma (2:46)
2. Betty Lavette - Let Me Down Easy (2:51)

The Twelfth Ten Commandments

Aaaah....COVERS! They can drive me crazy sometimes!
Strange, beautiful or just plain boring versions of songs I know!
Once in a while they're even 'better' than the original...
Weird fact is that there are a lot of them, or is it that not so weird at all?
Today's first song is THE original, don't get me wrong,
I only put it up here so the difference with it's cover stands out more!
The rest is just plain fun, here we go
...

1. Bobbie Gentry - Ode To Billie Joe (4:15)

The Eleventh Ten Commandments

Hi.
Strictly jazz? Well, luckily for me jazz comes in many different sorts and in many different colors. It isn't all about Stan Getz, Dave Brubeck or Charlie Parker either. For me, discovering jazz music was one of the best things ever happened to me...It started way back with me buying John Coltrane's A Love Supreme and things forever changed since then!
It was hard for me to point out only 10 songs for this post...
let's say I'm quite confident more jazz is gonna slip into the next 'commandments'... that's for sure!
Let the music do the talking now:

1. Bennie Maupin Ensemble - Tapping Things (5:40)
2. Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet - Stompin' at the Cranium (5:06)
3. David Murray & GWO-KA Masters - Gwotet (12:14)
4. Don Cherry - Art Deco (8:43)
5. Jimi Tenor - Outta Space (6:25)
6. John Coltrane - Song of the Underground Railroad (6:44)
7. Last Of The Hipmen - Punaluu Peter (8:56)
8. Oliver Nelson - Hoe Down (4:43)
9. Rahsaan Roland Kirk - Raouf (3:05)
10. Wayne Horvitz & Zony Mash - Stompin At The Cranium (6:39)
or:
enjoy, E-mile
