282: Bella By Barlight...

Hi.
Today a post inspired by a song that caught my attention.
(maybe in a strange way...)
I've always believed that Lurie's song from the OST
Stranger Than Paradise was somehow a humerous twist
on the jazz classic penned by Ned Washington/Victor Young.
-
I started this compilation with that song,
rest are all versions of this jazz standard.
-
(Once again - I must thank all the original bloggers,
without whom this constantly cosy, coincidental corny
cover-continuum couldn't continue co-exist)
-
LYRICS:
-
The song a robin sings
Through years of endless springs,
The murmur of a brook at e-ven-tide
That ripples by a nook where two lovers hide.
A great symphonic theme,
That's stella by starlight and not a dream.
My heart and I agree
She's ev'ry - thing on earth to me.
A great symphonic theme,
That's stella by starlight and not a dream.
My heart and I agree
She's ev'ry - thing on earth to me.
She's ev'ry - thing
On earth to me.

279: Feeling Good!

hi.
Today a workout on a song that
(if you're in the mood)
says it all.
Nina Simone's version is ofcourse the
undisputed winner of them all, even if some folks remix it...
-
Birds flying high
You know how I feel
Sun in the sky
You know how I feel
Breeze driftin' on by
You know how I feel
It's a new dawn
It's a new day
It's a new life
For me
And I'm feeling good
-
Fish in the sea
You know how I feel
River running free
You know how I feel
Blossom on a tree
You know how I feel
It's a new dawn
It's a new day
It's a new life
For me
And I'm feeling good
-
Dragonfly out in the sun you know what I mean, don't you know
Butterflies all havin' fun you know what I mean
Sleep in peace when day is done
That's what I mean
And this old world is a new world
And a bold world
For me
-
Stars when you shine
You know how I feel
Scent of the pine
You know how I feel
Oh freedom is mine
And I know how I feel
It's a new dawn
It's a new day
It's a new life
For me
-
And I'm feeling good

278: another fab-four favourite...

Hi.
Another fab-four favourite de moi...
First REAL COOL version I ever heard was the one by
Booker T & The M.G.'s on the McLemore Avenue from 1970.
Steve Cropper had it seriously going on
(like he did on every Booker T. album,
ofcourse, but this is besides the point[:-)
Obviously this song has been done a million times,
here a few to keep the fab-four flavour flowing...
-
Enjoy!
-
Here come old flat top
He come groovin' up slowly
He got joo joo eyeballs
He want holy rollers
He got hair down to his knees
Got to be a joker
He just do what he please
-
He wear no shoeshine
He got toe jam football
He got monkey finger
He shoot Coca Cola
He say I know you, you know me
One thing I can tell you is
You got to be free
Come together,
right now
Over me
-
He bag production
He got walrus gumboot
He got Ono sideboard
He one spinal cracker
He got feet down below his knees
Hold you in his armchair
You can feel his disease
Come together,
right now
Over me
-
He roller coaster
He got early warning
He got muddy water
He one Mojo filter
He say one and one and one is three
Got to be good looking'cause he's so hard to see
Come together,
right now
Over me
-
Come together, yeah
Come together, yeah
Come together, yeah
Come together, yeah

276: join the Caravan...

Hi.
E-mile Says some requests just can't be ignored...
-
"Caravan" was written by pianist, bandleader, composer
Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington (1899-1974),
Juan Tizol (1900-1984),
and Irving Mills (1894-1985).
"Caravan" was usually the second number played
when the Ellington band performed.
"Caravan" is considered by some to be the first real Latin jazz tune,
although it owes as much to "Middle Eastern" melodies.
Tizol immediately sold the rights to the song to Irving Mills,
Ellington's publisher and publicist,
for $25, but Mills agreed to give the rights and royalties
back to Tizol after the song became a success.
-
Night and stars above that shine so bright
The myst'ry of their fading light
That shines upon our caravan
Sleep upon my shoulder as we creep
Across the sand so I may keep
The mem'ry of our caravan
This is so exciting
You are so inviting
Resting in my arms
As I thrill to the magic charms
Of you beside me here beneath the blue
My dream of love is coming true
Within our desert caravan!
-
Ellington’s arrangement of “Caravan” makes the song.
Starting in a minor key and performed with a Middle Eastern beat,
the music creates an exotic atmosphere, all the while conjuring up
such elements as camels, tents and the desert.
For those imagining a hot and dusty day in the caravan trade,
Irving Mills’ lyrics provide a significant course correction,
relating intrigue and romance as two lovers travel beneath the stars.
Mills’ rhyming is simple, the words seem dashed off, and,
unless you can accept an implied progression of time,
the lines are contradictory:
The stars are bright yet their light is fading;
it is night yet you are “beside me here beneath the blue.”
To Mills’ credit, however, his phrases are modest and evocative,
nicely supporting the overall caravan mood.
-
Here you have some Caravan folks,
enjoy!
