90: Play the Kirk-O-Blues!

Hi.
Today (and also for the weekend !) a selection of
ten very blues-orientated songs done by Rahsaan
(yeah that's right, Brotha' J:-) Roland Kirk.
The man was "the real deal" and could play 'em like no other!
I had a great time choosing from my rather large pile of Kirk-CD's,
maybe another idea is to select an "all-flute" post someday?
Yeah, I could post "Here comes the whistleman" but that's just...
...well, plain lazyness :-) So, that's no option.
Or an " all-flute-not-all-Kirk" kinda thing?
Anyways,
hope you like today's KirK-O-Blues!

1. Roland Kirk - A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square (5:16)
2. Roland Kirk - Carney And Begard Place (5:33)
3. Roland Kirk - I Didn't Know About You (4:01)
4. Roland Kirk - Slow Blues (10:19)
5. Roland Kirk - The Black And Crazy Blues (6:07)
6. Roland Kirk - The Creole Love Call (3:53)
7. Roland Kirk - The Inflated Tear (4:58)
8. Roland Kirk & Al Hibbler - Do Nothing Til You Hear From Me (4:39)

i'd love an all-flute mix. jazz flute is the ultimate goatee-bachelor-geek trip. how chicks hate jazz flute is simply amazing... did you ever see will ferrell's stupid flick anchorman, with the jazz club and flute scene? so brilliant

beAThunTer, don't get me wrong:
it's NOT my favourite (solo) instrument also, that would be TENOR sax, but sometimes Kirk, Laws, Alexander, McNeil or even Steig whistle NICE :-) Must admit that I haven't seen the flick you mentioned, did I miss something
:D But seriously, that all-flute thing (hey Beastie Boys?!) is coming up one of these days.
Check Ronald Snijders ( a dutch jazz musician, we've seen him live, a few months ago, and that will (maybe) take away some of the preoccupations 'bout the flute as being a not-so-cool thing :-)

yeah, ron snijders, jayson lindh, chris hinze too are bad motherflutists.
don't forget our main man herbie mann!
of course the beastie boys... that track with jeremy steig's sample
(legwork i think)

no, you didn't miss much avoiding anchorman...it's just one of these stoopidest, 70's inspired films from the ferrell/wilson/carell clique but this particular jazz club-flute scene is worth it.
maybe you'll catch it on youtube

frankly,i personally dig jazz flute a lot. mainly on laid-back/funky grooves but check eric dolphy playing live with trane in stockholm - an amazing take of "my favorite things" that definitely pushed the instrument high on my goosebumps scale

jazz flute is cool but experience tend to prove girls loathe it, right next to vibes or marimbas... then i only date rock chicks so how would i know better...

ey, Beathunter,
been digging 'round for (at least) 10 cool flute tracks and found them, so it's coming...
In regard to the chicks NOT diggin'
flute, vibes or marimbas: you're right about that! Though I must admit I'm no big vibes man myself either...My girlfriend HATES the "smooth-lounge-alike" sounds of the vibes, they really piss her off, she's a big Ben Harper fan btw
Do I know that My Favourite Things version? On which album is it? I know a few Dolphy albums (also with some flute), can't say I'm familiar with the live in Stockholm I think...but when it gave you goosebumps it oughtta be good?! Rockchix vs. jazzcat, is it that yang-ying kinda thing?
[:-)
peace, E-mile

it's trane live in stockholm, 1961. unfortunately, on either vinyl or cd versions the sound is far from van gelder's standards but the musicality of dolphy's flute saves it
