"For He's A Jolly Good Fellow" is a song which is sung to congratulate a person on a significant event, such as a retirement, a promotion, a birthday, the birth of a child, or the winning of a championship sporting event. The melody originates from that of the French song "Marlbrough s'en va-t-en guerre." The traditional children's song, The Bear Went Over the Mountain is sung to the same tune.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow" is the second-most popular song in the English language, following "Happy Birthday to You" and followed by "Auld Lang Syne." It is frequently used instead of "Happy Birthday to You" in films and TV to avoid possible copyright issues.

2 Lyrics

As with many songs that use gender-specific pronouns, the song can be altered to agree with the sex of the intended recipient, "he" being replaced with "she."

===American version===
For he's a jolly good fellow, for he's a jolly good fellow
For he's a jolly good fellow (hold then)(pause), which nobody can deny
Which nobody can deny, which nobody can deny
For he's a jolly good fellow, for he's a jolly good fellow
For he's a jolly good fellow (hold then)(pause), which nobody can deny!

2.1 British and Australian version

For he's a jolly good fellow, for he's a jolly good fellow
For he's a jolly good fellow (pause), and so say all of us
And so say all of us, and so say all of us
For he's a jolly good fellow, for he's a jolly good fellow
For he's a jolly good fellow (pause), and so say all of us

3 Variations

The British and American versions can be combined, normally with "and so say all of us" in the middle of the verse, and "which nobody can deny" at the end.
In some parts of the United Kingdom, when singing the song to the driver of a bus or coach, usually on a specially commissioned trip rather than a standard scheduled journey, it is customary to add "on the bus" to the line "and so say all of us," resulting in "and so say all of us on the bus."

Amongst certain groups a different word is substituted for "fellow."

Dear E-mile, I know I'm a bit late, but nevertheless ... I've sent you a song: Eagles - The Journey Of The Sorcerer, from the album "One Of These Nights".

Why THIS piece? Well, it's your birthday, right? And it's your 42nd birthday, right?

1. Because ... I love it, it was imprinted into me when I watched the great original BBC TV series (see wiki link below)

2. Because http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_of_These_Nights#.22Journey_of_the_Sorcerer.22

2. Because ... it seems to fit.

Questions left? ;-)

Best wishes for you, and I guess it will be even a better birthday evening if you don't get to read my mail :-D

Hartelijke groeten, Tom

Happy Birthday E-mile! Hope you're celebrating in style, like my man Dali. Your wife may have something to say about that though :)

BTW, 42 is my favourite # (nothing to do with HHGTTU) so hope it's a great year for you!

Simon, Tom & Cheeba, thanks!
Cheeba, wtf means HHGTTU ? ? ?

Ooops...should be a "G" at the end. Gonna lose my geek cred on that one. It stands for Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy where the number 42 was the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything.

well, cheeba & tom, seems I have a splendid year ahead! I've only seen that (not so bad?) movie, and yes Tom, I will pick up on some reading (and try to find those BBC episodes as well). Oh boy, think I had some steadyness in my life (a loving wife, her 2 daughters living with us now, my dog and 2 new cats, and things only will go better from here on? - well, I'm a blessed person, I'm aware of that!
And also the feed-back, complicity and genuine interest from all over this wonderful globe feels like a heartwarming hug to me...
may the force be with us (to quote a reaaaaly silly movie) and thank you friendly, fellow fiesta-lovin' folks! I wish you a full belly and a good shack sometimes [:-)
If you don't mind, I'm gonna live my 42th from now on...
cheers & peace, E-mile
