344: Goodbye Pork Pie Hat...

Hi.
Over 3 & a half hours of this monumental tune...

Sometimes I get a bit sentimental hearing this,
most of the times it happens listening to the versions
without the words...but that mr. Kirk version does it
even with all the words to the tune...
I included this old-time-favourite-de-moi
in some older posts as well, you can look 'em up below...

BTW: some extraordinary Lester Young stuff

  12. Mingus recorded at least 2 versions, on the albums "Ah Hum" & "Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus", where GPPH is credited as "Theme for Lester Young".

A fine solo version is the one recorded in 1969 by John Mc Laughlin on his album "My goal's beyond"

  13. Dri, thanks for the feedback, I got all 3 CD's you mentioned [:-)
For me the "classic" GPPH version is the one from Ah Um...
@ Moi Meme: some REALLY nice versions, totally awesome, thanks a lot for sharing!

  14. Here are 12 more versions by Gil Evans, my heroe : mp3 only, as my hard drive is smaller than my usb key, and lowbitrate for the edited ones, as I don't like much to bootleg edited recordings. I also added the one with J. McLauglin (Ravenna 1986) you already had and a few rare & nice pics of GE.

In all the versions you collected, my favorite ones are Roland Kirk's on "The Return of the 5000 db man" (like you, E-mile), the big band one of Mingus, chorused by Booker Ervin, the solo version of Mc Laughlin on "My goal's beyond" and the Gil Evans-Steve Lacy duet on "Paris Blues".

  15. BTW, here are 10 versions of Gil Evans' orchestration of Summertime. I didn't checked all the versions you collected, but I guess you already have some of them.

  29. amnesia, all 3 links from moi meme )incl. the march 1st) are still alive....I tried them myself just now [:-)

  30. E-mile, thanks for that. I was after Dri's Gil Evans post of 1 March (which isn't working)but find I do have them. I'm downloading Moi Meme's first post -I had missed that - but it seems that his second and third are the same, from mediafire reference, which is how I got confused!. Thanks again.
