The other day I bought the Collected Works from Johnny Frigo,

partly because it had an over 10 minutes version on it of

the great Buddy Miles anthem Them Changes.

(first time we all heard it was probably on Band Of Gypsys?)

Finally a version WITH vocals, though I'm not sure if they're

the "original" so to say...the lyrics are by Lena Schwarz and the

song can be found on THIS album. It's all a bit Kurt Weil-ish,

even a Tom Waits song in German...

Totally unexpected I had a nice conversation at my local

public library with a very pleasent peasant the other day

and all of a sudden we talked about the great & late Barney Wilen,

it appeared he spend almost 10 years working on a

Barney Wilen "story & discography"!

It is said, that one good thing often leads to another.
Some time ago, I was searching the internet for

a jazz track by Duke Pearson that has blown me away

when I heard it played on an FM radio station.

Not only did I find that track,

I also found 9 other terrific Duke Pearson

compositions, taken from 6 of his albums.

And the cherry on top was learning that Duke Pearson

had written one of my favourite songs – Christo Redentor !

Amazingly, it was all a gift, from the author of this blog.

Pretty neat wouldn’t you say, that someone would go to all the way

in effort to freely share one’s passion for music with others?
So there’s your good thing.

Sometimes even album-covers are being "sampled"

or re-used, but that's a good thing, it keeps you alert.

And most of the times they are innocent little "inside" jokes.

A long time ago I stumbled upon a site where those examples

were collected...pity I lost that spot in my favorites map, though.

On the other hand there are also covers of albums reworked,

they keep the original real close to them, some examples are

on the bottom pic of this twice as nice part 12.

For the songs today, however, we're stuck with some real NICE ones,

Hi,

today a dozen covers from the title song

of what is probably Marvin's finest hour.

First of all, it's too bad Jimmy McGriff died

the other day, may he groove in peace forever!

Second, till today (no less than 37 years ago!)

that song -and album, for that matter- hasn't lost

ANY of its importance, dealing with items as urban decay,

environmental woes, military turbulence, police brutality,

unemployment and poverty (quoted from AMG) Essential.

The Ricardo McNealy version is from a CD by the Truth & Soul

label, one I (actually!) WON over at Heavy Soul Brutha's place

in a contest! Recommended. (all stuff from Truth & Soul btw)

One that never fails to move me is the one by Swamp Dogg,

a truly sad story of a soldier returning from the Vietnam war

with a bad habit (and a piece of shrapnell in his knee).

Hi,

today (indeed) another part of the twice as nice version fiesta!

To me the Sunny done by James Brown is one of the best ever,

even in that new remixed version...

I saw the Soledad Brothers live once,

they sounded somewhat how (probably) the Rolling Stones

did in their early years:

raw, fat soulful rhythm 'n' blues with

bits of old-fashioned garage-trash along the way.

Their sax player stole the show that night (for me!)

We became pretty drunk also, in short:

The 2 Eric Burdon songs came from the same album,

a really, really enjoyable album I still like very much.

Anybody knew that a young, unknown guitarist played on it?

Called Andy Summers? In 1968 he was 'only' 25 or 26 or so.

Nine years later, in 1977 they started that "other band".

Light My Fire is ofcourse done a million times,

just as Stand By Me for that matter.

I really like the Herbie Mann version,

just listen for yerselves!

Maybe a 'bitchin' idea is to do your odd

Gene Ammons' Jungle Strut version is 'asking'

A) it's a great wah'd-out track

B) it's a great Santana cover!

So I made up my mind & present it here along

(speaking of Carlos Santana,

whom I've seen live at North Sea Jazz, years ago)
