276: join the Caravan...

Hi.
E-mile Says some requests just can't be ignored...
-
"Caravan" was written by pianist, bandleader, composer
Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington (1899-1974),
Juan Tizol (1900-1984),
and Irving Mills (1894-1985).
"Caravan" was usually the second number played
when the Ellington band performed.
"Caravan" is considered by some to be the first real Latin jazz tune,
although it owes as much to "Middle Eastern" melodies.
Tizol immediately sold the rights to the song to Irving Mills,
Ellington's publisher and publicist,
for $25, but Mills agreed to give the rights and royalties
back to Tizol after the song became a success.
-
Night and stars above that shine so bright
The myst'ry of their fading light
That shines upon our caravan
Sleep upon my shoulder as we creep
Across the sand so I may keep
The mem'ry of our caravan
This is so exciting
You are so inviting
Resting in my arms
As I thrill to the magic charms
Of you beside me here beneath the blue
My dream of love is coming true
Within our desert caravan!
-
Ellington’s arrangement of “Caravan” makes the song.
Starting in a minor key and performed with a Middle Eastern beat,
the music creates an exotic atmosphere, all the while conjuring up
such elements as camels, tents and the desert.
For those imagining a hot and dusty day in the caravan trade,
Irving Mills’ lyrics provide a significant course correction,
relating intrigue and romance as two lovers travel beneath the stars.
Mills’ rhyming is simple, the words seem dashed off, and,
unless you can accept an implied progression of time,
the lines are contradictory:
The stars are bright yet their light is fading;
it is night yet you are “beside me here beneath the blue.”
To Mills’ credit, however, his phrases are modest and evocative,
nicely supporting the overall caravan mood.

Good luck with this one, E-mile!

One of my older friends collected versions of Caravan and had over 600 - before the web existed. Hopefully pursuing this means you'll be around with the mixes for a looooong time!

yeah, Cheeba, I remembered you telling me this... what a collection that must be! My sickness however will stick to Summertime, though I can't get Caravan out of my head after tonight. That Christo Redentor-thing isn't going to work well anytime soon, there are too many little "abarations" to make it work for someone like me [:-) Your latest posts are still waiting for me to hear, been busy over at ROAL and caught some bad case of Vandermark-virus past couple of weeks. You know how it is
(hard work and no pay-just satisfaction and itching ears-)
hope all's well at your end,
peace, E-mile

next post 's gonna be 'bout no Caravan...maybe how you get stuck in traffic, or about how good Alfa Super Strong 9.2 beer tastes, or just another Stevie Wonder tribute,
maybe an instrumentals-interlude to
keep things unsaid, well, thanks for all the feed-back (I REALLY APPRECIATE IT!)but next post's gonna be all F.U.N.K.Y. (this I decided out of the blue, listening to the new New Mastersounds...)
peace, E-mile

I remember you told me 'Work, family, cats & dog & all that jazz is nipping away big bits of time these days [:-) '
These days are gone?
Or do you perform 2 days in one?
I also remember a song called 'Do you sleep at nights?'...

Thx anyway
