94: Mississippi music

Hi.
First of all, today's selection contains 11 songs,
I couldn't choose between the 2 versions of Jimi's
fierce and brutal, guitar-grinding statement.
The theme is obvious ofcourse, some songs are about the river
and some are about the state (the state's in?!).
Not only the music here's great (I only bring you the best, d'oh)
the lyrics are well worth listening to also!
And yes, David Murray does a great job without 'em :-)
-
1. Bobbie Gentry - Mississippi Delta (3:04)
2. Booker T. & Priscilla - Mississippi Voodoo (3:07)
3. David Murray - Bright Mississippi (7:56)
4. Jazz Is Dead - Mississippi Half Step Uptown Toodleoo (6:06)
5. Jimi Hendrix - Peace In Mississippi (A) (5:28)
6. Jimi Hendrix - Peace In Mississippi (B) (4:22)
7. JJ Grey & Mofro - Mississippi (4:28)
8. Mavis Staples - Down In Mississippi (4:57)
9. Mavis Staples - In The Mississippi River (4:26)
10. Nina Simone - Mississippi Goddam (4:45)
11. Southside Movement - Mississippi Cutback (2:43)
-
Sorry, there were some technical difficulties,
now the link and the DL should be fine:

93: Ghetto part 5

Hi.
Today a (quite mixed) bunch "ghetto-stories"...
First of all, don't get me wrong, it's sad they exist!
As I was searching the www for some "visual aid"
the sheer sadness of those places hit me...
I myself used to live in a real bad neighboorhood for 8 years
(guns, drugs, prostitution and violence were part of everyday live
there - they tore down the place and built new houses-
so I know a bit of the horror)
but we had gas, water and electricity (most of the times anyway).
A famous reggae song is called: Food, Clothes & Shelter

Here's another version for y'all.-

I'll shut up now and let these songs do the talking.
The Donny Hathaway cover is brought to you exclusively by Ish,
who's ears, generosity & spirit will not soon be forgotten.
(not in this lifetime, anyways!)
I'm almost feeling sorry for the contribution here from
"that certain lady", but hey,
maybe I'll bring you the "uncensored" version from Elvis
(without Cartman!) next time, so buckle up...
The WAR cover is nice though...
-
1. Branford Marsalis - Stretto From The Ghetto (7:16)
2. Clash - Ghetto Defendant (4:45)
3. David Liebman - Children Of The Ghetto (3:42)
4. Dolly Parton - In The Ghetto (2:47)
5. George Shearing - The World Is A Ghetto (4:41)
6. Lauren Hill - Every Ghetto Every City (5:14)
7. Lonnie Gordon - Little Ghetto Boy (5:32)
8. Los Fabulosos Cadillacs - Queen From The Ghetto (version dub) (5:27)
9. Mos Def - Ghetto Rock (3:53)
10. South Park - In The Ghetto (4:01)

92: Ten times Jimi's covers

Hi,
today 10 covers of the late & great Jimi Hendrix!
It's rather a mixed and diverse bunch,
I had quite some fun with them.
But after this, I realized (once more) that the originals
probably never can be equaled,
simply because Jimi's music was his OWN!
That's for sure.
Even for the songs that he covered,
he managed to keep them close to himself.
Wouldn't he have died that young, I wonder,
what kinda music he would have had left in store for us?
You can only guess, and these 10 songs remind us of his legacy.
Enjoy.

1. Ben Harper - Voodoo Chile (11:18)

90: Play the Kirk-O-Blues!

Hi.
Today (and also for the weekend !) a selection of
ten very blues-orientated songs done by Rahsaan
(yeah that's right, Brotha' J:-) Roland Kirk.
The man was "the real deal" and could play 'em like no other!
I had a great time choosing from my rather large pile of Kirk-CD's,
maybe another idea is to select an "all-flute" post someday?
Yeah, I could post "Here comes the whistleman" but that's just...
...well, plain lazyness :-) So, that's no option.
Or an " all-flute-not-all-Kirk" kinda thing?
Anyways,
hope you like today's KirK-O-Blues!

1. Roland Kirk - A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square (5:16)
2. Roland Kirk - Carney And Begard Place (5:33)

87: wahwah chronicles, part 9

Hi.
Today part 9 of the (I hope neverending) wah chronicles.
Everything funky as hell & groovy as well!
On the first track I'm not so much near completely sure,
where all of those wah'd sounds come from-
my guess is that the keys, the bass AND the guitars are switched on?
That song is covered a hundred times or so by the way,
I think it was a Bill Withers original.

85: Harlem Nocturn(e)

Hi.
The first time this song caught my ears' attention,
was when I bought (and listened endlessly to)
That album has a (no need to say?) lotta punch
and I still play it (so every now and then).
-
Surfin around for more info on the song,
I stumbled (once again) on the great Office Naps blog,
where DJ Little Danny did an extensive writing on the song.
Following I snatched from there (also the pic)
and is for your edutainment...
-
DJ LITTLE DANY SAYS:
-
"The immortal ”Harlem Nocturne” was conceived by Earle Hagen,
who, before his prolific Hollywood career, worked as an arranger
and trombonist in the big bands of the ‘30s.
Hagen was behind loads of memorable soundtracks and television
themes- The Andy Griffith Show, The Dick Van Dyke Show,
I Spy, Gomer Pyle, The Mod Squad, among others -
but his ”Harlem Nocturne,” recorded in 1939
during a stint with the Ray Noble Orchestra,
is the source of his enduring fame.
“Harlem Nocturne,” big band success and later
R&B instrumental staple, was performed most famously
in 1959 by New Jersey’s Viscounts,
though hundreds of versions would be committed to
record whenever high drama was needed.
“Harlem Nocturne” is a crime soundtrack gold standard."
-
