128: Twice As Nice, part 12

-
Hi.
Sometimes even album-covers are being "sampled"
or re-used, but that's a good thing, it keeps you alert.
And most of the times they are innocent little "inside" jokes.
A long time ago I stumbled upon a site where those examples
were collected...pity I lost that spot in my favorites map, though.
The 2 album covers here above are about what I mean.
-
On the other hand there are also covers of albums reworked,
they keep the original real close to them, some examples are
on the bottom pic of this twice as nice part 12.
-
For the songs today, however, we're stuck with some real NICE ones,
Misses Esther Phillips is ofcourse an all-time fav, and the Rhoda Scott
workout takes you 'bout everywhere a Hammond can take you...
Both Papa Was A Rolling Stone-covers keep it close to the
well-known Temptations-feel and the Neville's originated Hercules
song gets 2 rather different renderings...that Beatless version is a gem!
Enjoy.
-
1. Beatless - Hercules (7:01)
2. Esther Phillips - Fever (2:49)
3. Fever Tree - Fever (3:42)
4. Nineteenth Whole - Slippin' Into Darkness (9:43)
5. Patricia Barber - Use Me (6:32)
6. Rhoda Scott - Slipping Into Darkness (18:44)
7. Sidney, George and Jackie - Papa Was A Rolling Stone (4:20)
8. Ultrafunk - Use Me (4:51)
9. Undisputed Truth - Papa Was a Rollin' Stone (3:22)
10. World Party - Hercules (3:16)

127: What's Going On?

Hi,
today a dozen covers from the title song
of what is probably Marvin's finest hour.
-
First of all, it's too bad Jimmy McGriff died
the other day, may he groove in peace forever!
-
Second, till today (no less than 37 years ago!)
that song -and album, for that matter- hasn't lost
ANY of its importance, dealing with items as urban decay,
environmental woes, military turbulence, police brutality,
unemployment and poverty (quoted from AMG) Essential.
-
The Ricardo McNealy version is from a CD by the Truth & Soul
label, one I (actually!) WON over at Heavy Soul Brutha's place
in a contest! Recommended. (all stuff from Truth & Soul btw)
So cool :-)
(& thanks again H.S.B.!!!)
-
Malik Adouane did an odd all-covers-tracks album a while back,
one of them was the hilarious "Shaft" (maybe a next time),
today we & lots of others don't know what's going on,
so enjoy these dirty dozen!
-
1. Donny Hathaway - What's Going On (5:23)
2. Esquires - What's Going On (4:26)

125: ghetto stories part 6

Hi.
I guess this is one of the last of the ghetto-posts,
though sadly enough it seems like those
places themselves will continue to exist...

Some sound even 'better' than the originals...

123: Drugs, part 3

Hi.
Today part 3 (indeed) of the drug-related stories.
One that never fails to move me is the one by Swamp Dogg,
a truly sad story of a soldier returning from the Vietnam war
with a bad habit (and a piece of shrapnell in his knee).
Blessed are the days you're sober and sane,
maybe there will be no more junkies if they'll find a Cure For Pain
(that's right Mark Sandman).
Lissen up.

122: twice as nice part 11

Hi,
today (indeed) another part of the twice as nice version fiesta!
To me the Sunny done by James Brown is one of the best ever,
even in that new remixed version...
I saw the Soledad Brothers live once,
they sounded somewhat how (probably) the Rolling Stones
did in their early years:
raw, fat soulful rhythm 'n' blues with
bits of old-fashioned garage-trash along the way.
Their sax player stole the show that night (for me!)
We became pretty drunk also, in short:
check out their live album for a taste of that...
(yet even better: catch them live :-)
Cheers!

Hi.
Today (finally?) a fresh dog-doing!
A wide variety of musical styles here,
the 2 real favs de moi are Tom Waits & Eels.
Steve Tibbetts made some real cool albums
wayback in the (early) 80's for ECM with his strange,
distorted guitar sound(scapes).
His more recent albums are not that "raw".
The pic here is ofcourse of our dog Rex.
Enjoy.

120: Flute part 2

Hi.
It seems people enjoyed the first part,
so today a little follow up on those.
The second track isn't exactly 'all-flute'
but was so nice I just had to include it...
The vocals on The Sidewinder are also great,
and maybe Keef Hartley is a somewhat strange choice,
but he made some really 'out-there' music :-)
Friends of the flute, feel free to find freedom & fun,
fast forward for fine & funky flutes part 2

119: twice as nice part 10

Hi.
Today another one in those twice as nice series.
The 2 Eric Burdon songs came from the same album,
a really, really enjoyable album I still like very much.
Anybody knew that a young, unknown guitarist played on it?
Called Andy Summers? In 1968 he was 'only' 25 or 26 or so.
Nine years later, in 1977 they started that "other band".
Light My Fire is ofcourse done a million times,
just as Stand By Me for that matter.
I really like the Herbie Mann version,
just listen for yerselves!
Maybe a 'bitchin' idea is to do your odd
all-Stones-version comp sometime?

HI.
Today is a hell of a rainy day!
After nearly a week of tropical temps,
the inevitable happened:

116: WHAT IS FUNK?

Hi.
Today, maybe it's possible (I doubt it),
but surely time to try to answer that question...
Why I bring it up, you might ask?
-
-
Some questions stay in your head for a whole day,
for me, this was one of them :-)
I can't really put it into words, so I'll try to answer
it in my "musical-manifesto" here at E-mile says...
However I hope the answers these 20 (!) songs might
provide will leave the question still standing strong.
Maybe Funk is when you can't explain what the funk
is happening, but you're dancing like mad?
Viva Le Funk!

115: Jungle parts 5

Hi.
Today it's time for Jungle post nr. 5.
When you think it's strange I built today's pic round a car,
well, ever been stuck in traffic these days?
If you thought you missed the (obvious) original from
Kool & The Gang, here it is all the s(h)ame.
-
And if you thought including that song was somewhat
of a hard decision to make,
how 'bout this:
2 (TWO!) songs by Gene Ammons???
In the same lousy post?
Here's the little dilemma I was stuck with:
Gene Ammons' Jungle Strut version is 'asking'
for 2 things at the same time:
A) it's a great wah'd-out track
and
B) it's a great Santana cover!
So I made up my mind & present it here along
with the other Jungle-tunes all the same :-)
(speaking of Carlos Santana,
whom I've seen live at North Sea Jazz, years ago)
here's also another cover of the same song by Coco Montoya,
nicked of some "guitar greatest" Santana tribute album .
So that could count as one for the twice as nice section as well
I guess...
Before I go mentally ill or even more nutty than I already am,
with all of these choices to make,
I'll just round it up with: Axl'n'Roses say cheese!
Enjoy.
-
1. Beach Boys - In The Jungle The Mighty Jungle (2:39)
2. Rakim - Concrete Jungle (4:10)
3. Coco Montoya - Jungle Strut (4:58)

8. Jack Johnson - Jungle Gym (2:24)
9. Kool & The Gang - Jungle Boogie (3:07)
10. Richard Cheese - Welcome To The Jungle (2:41)

111: Fornicate!

Hi.
For today a little funky fornication, firey foreplay,
sexy satisfaction, teasing tunes & other stirring sounds.
Maybe the first song sets you off off the wrong foot,
but there are actually people who get off on those
:-)
Rest of the songs are rather obvious, I guess.
Though Oliver Sain meant something else when he
entitled his compostion, no doubt (wonderful sax).
Found that song on the ever great Funky Dispostion btw.
Anyways, enjoy these rather cheesy, but nevertheless
corny collection of inncocent intercourse i-pod songs.
Have a good one.

110: Cristo Redentor

Hi.
Today all songs I've heard (untill NOW) of the Duke Pearson song
Cristo Redentor,
a beautiful song he wrote after taking a trip to Latin America...
Musselwhite, Byrd & Mandell are versions probably lotsa folks know,
the others (perhaps) a little less.
-
My good friend Hans send me the version from Guaraldi,
a reader & (jazzy) listener, Dieter send the fantastic one by Fathead
and others I tracked down with a little help from our friends at AMG.
Magnus didn't cover it actually, but used a sample (from Byrd)
and built a new song around that. Great album btw.
-
Discogs does a better job, btw I have the 2004 CD+DVD version :-)
-
There are a few songs here I posted (much) earlier on the blog,
but I wanted to include them all in one batch.
So, for now, enjoy these Cristo Redentor tunes!
