64: Ode To: Ode To Billie Joe...

Hi.
For those who got their musical fixes here in a daily dose,
this song will not be much of a stranger...
(I posted the original & the Boudro cover in nr.12)
-
Find out more about the song HERE and read along HERE.
-
Today 8 women bring you their covers of this song,
and one French (not, see comments!) guy does it in ... well,
French ofcourse!
He (?) has done a wonderful job translating it!
I will give "les mots" at the bottom of this post.
Billy Larkin does a great "organ-ized" version,
and has a warm soulful voice too.
-
Along the way I discovered it was covered lots of times,
so here goes the first 10.
-
1. Anne Ducros - Ode To Billie Joe (6:31)
2. Billy Larkin & The Delegates - Ode To Billy Joe (3:40)
3. Diana Ross & the Supremes - Ode to Billie Joe (4:55)
4. Enoch Light - Ode To Billie Joe (3:52)
5. Joe Dassin - Marie Jeanne (Ode To Billie Joe) (4:14)
6. Megan Mullally - Ode To Billie Joe (4:46)
7. Nancy Wilson - Ode To Billie Joe (5:19)

-
ODE TO ODE TO BILLIE JOE pt.1
-
-
Maman me dit "Enfin, mon grand, tu n'as pas beaucoup d'appétit

63: John Coltrane...

Hi.
Maybe a bit "quite different" after the Wah-Wah chronicles part 4,
but I really wanted to do a little tribute and honour
one of the all-time greatest saxophone players and
jazz innovators of the last century for some time:
He's one of the few truly BIG ones,
someone who can extract tears from my eyes
by bringing joy to my ears,
a guy who can make me competely forget about time
or any of my my troubles,
and take me to places where I thought I've never been before,
though they might feel like giant deja vu's at the same time...
He's just awesome!
If you're NOT into jazz at all,
please try to listen to these 10 songs anyway,
maybe they "change" your ears and all that jazz?!
-
The classic Coltrane quartet
(Jimmy Garrsion, McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones)
lasted about 5 years or so, most of it perfecty
documented on the Impulse catalogue.
In that black/orange coloured row of albums are my most
favourite albums located, though I
(go figure)
have his earlier Prestige an Atlantic output as well.
If I'd win the lottery I would purchase THIS set too,
but a friend of mine has it
(yes, he'd won the lottery!)
and I made me 4 ... you get it ...
-
I can give you a list of albums that are "not to be lived without"
or I can suggest some of the stuff you don't want to miss,
but you can start by listening to these 10 songs as well...
-
1. John Coltrane - Alabama (take 4 & 5) (5:10)
2. John Coltrane - Amen (8:14)
3. John Coltrane - Crescent (8:44)
4. John Coltrane - Dear lord (5:37)
5. John Coltrane - Dear old stockholm (10:44)
6. John Coltrane - Greensleeves (3:45)
7. John Coltrane - Living space (10:24)
8. John Coltrane - Love (8:03)
9. John Coltrane - One down, one up (15:31)
10. John Coltrane - Up 'gainst the wall (3:16)

60: Sunday's Sweets

Carpe Diem.
Today's sunday gets a "song that do the matter" treatment...
I picked these songs because they all (in a way)
reflect on how a sunday CAN feel!
For some it's recovery time for a grand saturday's night out,
for some it's a visit to their family (in law)
for some it's a great day to post 10 songs about today...
and for some it's all of the 3 above :-)
And who could cover that Velvet Underground song
better than Mr. Bad Seed himself?

58: Jazzrock ???

Jazzrock...what the hell is that?
Is it rock that "jazzes"?
Or jazz that "rocks"?
I think most jazz really rocks, so that can't be it...
In a (silent-sic) way it started with the long songs Miles Davis
did on the "everybody loves to hate" album Bitches Brew, I guess.
Fact is in the early and mid 70's there was a whole lot of this music,
some of it was a bit tiring,
but lots of these sounds are still grooving me right out of my head!
Best kind of jazzrock (for me) is the kind that's still funky...
... and preferably uptempo.
And as a extra bonus, I'd like to have some freaky bass in it too.
Lissen up:
-
1. Billy Cobham - The Pleasant Pheasant (5:20)
2. Curt Cress Clan - Moving Right Along (2:47)
3. Garage A Trois - A-Frame (3:58)

56: Wah - Wah part 3

Hi,
today I wanna spend once again a little bit more time
on the wah wah pedal.
I found an amazing article wonderfully done by
DJ LITTLE DANNY on his Office Naps blog.
You can find it here, under part 2 Vox, Wah Wah.
Be sure to check it, he has a fabulous 7" from Vox company,
a sort of demonstrating disc for the (then) new wah-wah effect...
I linked the MP3's here & here for the lazy bones,
but please visit his blog, it's a very nice body of work!
Respect for his research and big thumbs up to DJ LITTLE DANNY!
Here comes my wah-wah selection part 3 for your listening pleasure:

55: RAIN, RAIN, RAIN...

Damn, last week, was nothing but rain, all day long...
Just as it does today.
Made me a bit "wear-y" and "worn-out",
so that's why you're put up with these songs
about the "blessings from the sky".
-
Or as Ray Manzarek puts it:
the semen of God that we know as rain...
-

2. Bob Azzam - Rain Rain Go Away (2:42)
3. Fat Freddys Drop - Rain (18:06)

-

-

-get your umbrella here-

54: People, life & the the things we do...

People, life and the things we do are like a giant puzzle,
and are in fact, NOT like a box of chocolates at all...
With that in mind I picked these 10 songs,
listening to the lyrics, rather than to the music,
so there're no musical similarities here.
-
You may start to get puzzled right now.

1. Amy Winehouse - In my bed (5:17)
2. Archive - Fuck U (5:14)

53: RASHAAN ROLAND KIRK, an introduction part 2

A proper introduction of the musical world of Rashaan
Roland Kirk needs -needless to say- more than just 10 songs.
I'm still choosing from the classic 60's Mercury output here.
(though the saxophone concerto I snug in
yesterday was actually from 1973)
-
Towards the end of the 60's and during the seventies
his music became a (whole) different story.
More extravaganza (yes, can you imagine that?)
and more experimental in a way.
-
But that's something for later on, for now,
let's swing like mad and put the next 10 on!
-
Included here is the song "that inspired" Ian Anderson from
Jethro Tull to pick up the flute..
Anyone with half a brain knows to which one I'm referring?
-
1. Roland Kirk - 3-In-1 Without The Oil (2:35)
2. Roland Kirk - A Stritch In Time (5:06)
3. Roland Kirk - Between The Fourth And The Fifth Step (3:43)
4. Roland Kirk - Black Diamond (5:24)
5. Roland Kirk - E.D. (2:25)
6. Roland Kirk - Hip Chops (3:35)
7. Roland Kirk - No Tonic Press (4:35)
8. Roland Kirk - Reeds And Deeds (5:20)
9. Roland Kirk - Serenade To A Cuckoo (4:35)
10. Roland Kirk - Song Of The Countrymen (6:56)
-

52: RASHAAN ROLAND KIRK, an introduction

Today it's about time I present you my "starter-kit"
(thank you for the term Brooding Bird)
for the music of Rashaan Roland Kirk.
-
To me the man is by far the hippest guy ever to walk this planet!
-
Visit the Rashaan website for more praise,
or read the wikipage.
-
All I will add to the matter is something amazing
about track 7, the Saxophone Concerto:
his circular breathing ability enabled him to record
"Concerto For Saxophone"
in one continuous take of about 20 minutes,
playing with no discernible "break" for inhaling...
-
1. Roland Kirk - Domino (3:14)
2. Roland Kirk - From Bechet, Fats and Byas (6:32)
3. Roland Kirk - Get Out Of Town (4:53)
4. Roland Kirk - Meeting On Termini's Corner (3:40)
5. Roland Kirk - Now Please Don't You Cry, Beautiful Edith (4:25)
6. Roland Kirk - Rip, Rig And Panic (7:01)
7. Roland Kirk - Saxophone Concerto (21:31)
8. Roland Kirk - Slippery, Hippery, Flippery (4:58)
9. Roland Kirk - Termini's Corner (2:21)
10. Roland Kirk - Where Monk And Mingus Live (4:10)

51: The Ghetto, part 3

49: The Ghetto, part 1

Hi.
A definition of "Ghetto" could be this one:
"A ghetto is a section of a city occupied by a minority group who live
there especially because of social, economic, or legal pressure.
The term "ghetto" is now commonly used
to refer to any poverty-stricken urban area."
Fact is it has always been a facet of life and it inspired countless
songs, today I post the first 10.

48: Love The Songs That Do The Matter..

...or, do the songs that love the matter...
Hi.
It might not come as a surprise,
but the 10 songs of today are about love,
strong love, crazy love, true love or simply put:
the love you can't live without.
Just like you don't want to miss out on these 10 great songs :-)
A little note on the Bobby Blue Bland song:
a cover of it was posted by me in the Mark Lanegan spot a little while back!
The Lambchop song is kinda tribute to Curtis Mayfield, very nice!
Enjoy.
-
1. Bad Company - Feel Like Makin' Love (5:16)
2. Baker Gurwitz Army - The Key (6:24)
3. Bobbie Gentry - You've Made Me So Very Happy (3:21)
4. Bobby Blue Bland - I'll Take Care Of You (2:27)

47: Back In The Day, part 2

Yeah, some more rap today!

Not as oldskool as my other post,
but still kinda back in da day.
In the 90's there was some cool and funky hiphop music too.
For example the Rawkus and the Quannum
labels had some very good stuff coming out...

I love the soul and funk samples used in today's selection.
My favourite here is perhaps Steve Def,
for that fat Blaxplotation-like sample.
But it's all good, check it out!
-
1. Hi & Mighty - B Boy Document (4:04)
2. Joey Chavez & Defari - Develop Tools (4:33)
3. Mos Def & Talib Kweli - Re-Definition (3:02)

-

46: Assorted Drugs And Other Stuff...

Not to worry, I'm not doped up or anything like that!
But ofcourse I like my occasional cold beverage :-)
Cheers.
I just liked the idea of, well, ofcourse first there's the sex,
then the DRUGS and then some rock 'n' roll...
It's just like Ian Dury said, that's right.
Music reflects life itself in many ways,
that's surely the reason why there are so many songs about love
(or the absence of it).
Plenty of drug-related material too...
Here comes my first stash:

1. Better Daze - Golden Brown (4:36)
2. Canned Heat - Amphetamine Annie (3:39)
3. Eels - Novocaine For The Soul (3:08)
4. Hayseed Dixie - Marijuana (2:55)

45: Somewhat "off" or a bit crazy...

The next 10 songs share one thing: they're a bit crazy!
Or silly. Or hilarious. Or, in a small way,"wonderfully off".
Or they sound funny. Or they're just plain retarded.
My favourite here is the one from the Novi Singers,
it's so beautiful it might in fact not belong here,
not with the other 9 for company!
The pic here down below is for the the song that someone
made out of various George W. Bush speeches...
A very handsome editing job :-)

1. Arthur Brown - Is There Nothing Beyond God (2:26)
2. Dan Le Sac VS Scroobius Pip - Thou Shalt Always Kill (3:26)
3. David Boyle - Da Vinci's Ho (3:56)

44: Covers Twice As Nice, part 5

Hi.
The twice as nice cover-section is back in town!
One of the most beautiful versions of Strange Fruit I know
is done by former Soft Machine's Robert Wyatt,
though the Billie Holiday version is ofcourse one
that's really "hard to beat".
The rather cheesy Donovan song stays rather cheesy here,
both versions :-)
Steely Dan is covered like a million times or so,
here's 2 great versions.
Enjoy.

1. 1860 Band - California Dreaming (5:48)
2. Baby Huey - California Dreaming (4:47)
3. Juju Orchestra - Do It Again -
ft. Carolyn Leonhart & Robert Smith (4:51)

42: Duke Pearson

Today I'd like to put a little sunshine on the work of Duke Pearson.
He wrote the song Christo Redentor,

40: Couldn't Care Less Monday...

10 great songs that don't share a theme?
No problema!

1. Alix Jacques Cole Band - Tessa's Theme (8:48)
2. Apemen - Shake Your Hoover (2:23)
3. Black Jazz Chronicles - Dope Stuff (5:27)

The Apemen are a great Dutch surfband,
Magnus used a sample of Duke Pearson's
Cristo Redentor in the song
and Marvin Pontiac is an a.k.a. of John Lurie...
How's that for totally random & none-connected facts?

34: Latin Playboys

I've always been someone who "liked" Los Lobos till I heard the
This one was "different" and raw compared to all the other albums !
A killer album, daring and very powerful.
Indeed, AMG mentiones this about it:
